Incumbent serves as Part-Time Maintenance for the St. Joseph County Parks & Recreation Department, responsible for performing general upkeep and maintenance of County Parks, facilities, buildings, and grounds.
Responsibilities
Maintain park buildings, grounds, trails, and playgrounds, including mowing grass; trimming and cutting shrubs and trees; cutting and splitting firewood; landscaping; seeding and planting; raking leaves; and removing trash and debris.
Assist with winter operations to maintain safe conditions during ice and snow events, including snow removal and application of salt to sidewalks and roadways as needed.
Clean and service restrooms, including sweeping and mopping floors; cleaning toilets and urinals; cleaning walls and ceilings; removing trash and replacing liners; and restocking soap and paper products.
Maintain shelters and rental buildings, including sweeping floors; removing trash and replacing liners; wiping tables and seating; dusting; and cleaning windows.
Operate a variety of trucks, equipment, and tools in the performance of duties, including but not limited to tractors, mowers, wood splitters, chippers, weed eaters, hedgers, trimmers, pruners, and common hand and power tools.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Working knowledge of methods, practices, and materials used in grounds and facility maintenance, with the ability to maintain park grounds and perform basic repairs on facilities and equipment.
Ability to safely operate a variety of trucks, equipment, and tools used in park maintenance.
Ability to physically perform the essential functions of the position, including driving; bending; reaching; crouching or kneeling; standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods; walking on uneven terrain; climbing ladders; pushing and pulling objects; and carrying or lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds.
Ability to occasionally work extended hours, evenings, and weekends as required.
Possession of a valid driver’s license with a demonstrated safe driving record, if required to operate Park Department vehicles (not required for utility vehicles or mowing equipment).
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; push, pull, bend, crouch, kneel, reach, stand, and walk for extended periods, including on uneven terrain.
Ability to climb ladders and work in awkward or confined positions as required.
Ability to safely operate hand and power tools used in routine maintenance tasks.
Requires close and distant vision, color and depth perception, hearing, manual dexterity, and the ability to communicate effectively.
Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and occasionally work extended hours, evenings, and weekends as needed.
