WORK SCHEDULE: Varies, evenings & weekends required; September – January (start & end dates flexible)

Incumbent serves as Leisure Services Intern for the St. Joseph County Parks & Recreation Department, responsible for assisting with programs, activities, and special events.

 

Responsibilities

 

Assists with planning, preparation, implementation and reporting of various leisure programs and activities including, but not limited to, canoeing, kayaking, disc golf, fishing, archery, geocaching, hayrides and winter sports.

 

Assists with planning and coordination of special projects. This includes but is not limited to; kiosk/display development, brochure/pamphlet development, and customer surveys.

 

Plans, implements, and evaluates outdoor recreation programs for a variety of ages.

 

Serves as liaison to outside groups to help coordinate activities and special events within St. Joseph County Parks.

 

Provide Park security services, checks in with rental groups, opens/closes the park facilities, enforces of park regulations, conflict resolution, crowd/traffic control, and customer service.

 

Assist in marketing and advertising promotional activities for Leisure Services (ex. social media, direct mail and web).

 

Help distribute marketing materials.

 

May assist with some interpretive services activities such as day camps.

 

Can be tailored for academic intern requirements.

 

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Working towards (or possessing) a Baccalaureate Degree in Parks and Recreation, Outdoor Education, Outdoor Recreation, Natural Science, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, Interpretation, Elementary Education, or related field preferred.

 

Must have strong leadership and supervisory skills, and promote teamwork. Ability to work well with others, including volunteers.

 

Must be able to communicate effectively and have excellent organizational skills.

 

Must establish and maintain effective public relations at all levels.

 

Must have adequate transportation and a valid Driver’s license. 

 

For-Hire Endorsement helpful

 

Must be able to lead group instruction.

 

Routine exposure to extreme levels of temperature, weather and physical activity

 

First Aid and CPR certifications helpful.

 

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and Outlook required.

 

Ability to learn other software programs.

 

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings.
