Incumbent serves as an Exemption and Personal Property Deputy for St Joseph County Assessor's Office administering and processing property tax exemptions and assessing personal property for taxation purposes. This includes evaluating exemption applications, verifying ownership and property use, maintaining accurate property records, and providing customer service to taxpayers and businesses. 

Responsibilities

Review and process applications for property tax exemption (e.g. educational, religious, nonprofit, ect.)

Ensure exemption claims meet legal and regulatory requirements. 

Assess personal property (e.g. business equipment, furnishings, machinery).

Assist taxpayers and business owners in completing personal property forms.

Assist with audit and appeal process when necessary. 

Attain training and stay current with property tax laws and regulations. 

Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of standard office practices and procedures with ability to apply such procedures to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations. 

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing a professional and friendly manner, as well as other County departments, attorneys, insurance agencies, and public. In addition to being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. 

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to work alone with minimal supervision and with others in a team environment. 

Education/Experience

High School Diploma or GED required

Minium 2 years of experience in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and previous work experience preferred. 

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform duties in a standard office environment, working at a desk and on a computer.
