This position is part-time, non-exempt and is covered under the Saint Joseph County Adult Probation Department Policy Manual and the Saint Joseph County Employee Policy Manual.
Hours: 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM Shift Times: Monday through Friday
Hours: 9:00 AM to Noon Shift Times: Saturday

Incumbent serves as part-time Laboratory Assistant for the St. Joseph County Adult Probation Department in the Court Substance Abuse Program Division.
Essential Functions:
Processes clients’ paperwork, including printing forms and labels, issuing ID cards, and generating consent forms for the distribution of drug test results.
Oversees/observes specimen collection, empties specimen window, and keeps samples in order.
Receives and verifies payment for drug testing, records payments in WINTOX report, and ensures the register tape matches the computer report.
Stocks supplies at the beginning and end of each shift, monitors the level of supplies, and notifies the supervisor when additional supplies are needed.
Ensures processing area and restrooms are clean and organized.
Attends regular staff meetings.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Incumbent performs standard and recurring duties according to established practices and procedures within the department. Errors in work are detected by means of supervisory review or standard departmental checks and safeguards. Undetected errors may result in loss of time within the department and/or inconvenience to other agencies or the public.
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, clients, other County departments, and members of the general public for the purposes of coordinating operations and exchanging information.
Incumbent reports directly to the Laboratory Technician.
Incumbent performs duties in a laboratory, including sitting/standing/walking at will, occasionally for long periods, lifting objects weighing under 25 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, reaching, handling/grasping/fingering objects, close vision, and hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent may be exposed to violent/irate individuals.
Incumbent required to work extended hours, evenings, and/or weekends per schedule.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED. Experience in specimen collection preferred.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Working knowledge of standard office and laboratory practices and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
Ability to read, write, and speak English and use standard equipment, including a computer, calculator, and cash register.
Ability to work with others in a team environment on several tasks at the same time, occasionally under time pressure.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions.
Ability to handle situations involving violent/irate individuals.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, clients, other County departments, and members of the general public in a courteous and tactful manner, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
