Incumbent serves as Deputy Clerk I - Finance for the St. Joseph County Clerk of the Circuit Court and is responsible for processing, balancing, and maintaining financial transactions received through the County courts and jail. The position performs daily financial operations involving bonds, garnishments, restitution, court costs, judgments, deposits, and till reconciliation while maintaining accurate financial records and providing assistance to court personnel and the public.

Responsibilities 

• Processes and accounts for daily funds received through the County courts and jail, including cash, checks, and credit card transactions, ensuring payments are accurately applied to the appropriate cases. • Processes bond transactions, including applying bond funds to cases and releasing bond funds upon receipt of appropriate judicial orders. • Processes garnishment checks and payments for restitution, court costs, judgments, and other court-ordered financial obligations. • Performs daily financial balancing procedures, including reconciling and exporting tills, scanning checks, preparing deposits, and securing funds in accordance with established office procedures. • Provides customer service and administrative support by answering telephone inquiries, assisting with financial and case-related questions within the scope of the position, and maintaining accurate records and supporting documentation.

 

Qualifications 

• Ability to accurately handle, count, process, and reconcile cash, checks, credit card transactions, and other financial transactions. • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy while processing a high volume of financial and case-related information. • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive court, financial, and personal information. • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, court personnel, other County departments, and members of the public. • Ability to organize work, follow established financial procedures, meet daily processing requirements, and identify and resolve discrepancies.

 

Education/Experience 

• High school diploma or GED required. • Previous experience involving cash handling, financial transactions, bookkeeping, banking, accounting, court operations, or related administrative work preferred.

 

Physical Requirements 

Ability to perform the essential functions of an office-based position, including prolonged periods of sitting and computer use; frequent use of standard office equipment; and occasional standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting or carrying materials associated with daily office and financial operations.
