Incumbent serves as Head Cashier for the St. Joseph County Treasurer’s Office, responsible for overseeing cash cage and vault operations and assisting office personnel.

Responsibilities

 

  • Opens vault at the start of each business day and retrieves cash drawer, signature stamp, and inheritance tax book.  Opens window, collects, and cashiers tax money from taxpayers and balances drawer at the end of each day.  Sets time and closes vault each day.
  • Complies, organizes, and verifies quietuses, balancing and forwarding to appropriate personnel for posting.
  • Ensures payments received via mail during tax season are properly processed, responds to questions/concerns of other office personnel, and provides training/instruction for new cashiers as needed.
  • Receipts credit card payments and processes voids and payment adjustments as appropriate.
  • Answers telephone, including taking payments, providing information and assistance, or directing to appropriate individual or department.
  • Performs duties of Accounting Clerk in their absence or as needed, including preparing and performing bank deposits, encoding checks, and maintaining main cash drawer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to count, compute, perform arithmetic operations, and compare, observe and compile, and classify data.
  • Ability to file, post, and mail materials.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, work on several tasks at the same time, and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.
  • Ability to occasionally work extended hours and evenings.

 

 

 

 

 

Education/Experience

 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of state laws pertaining to tax collections and policies, practices, and legal requirements of the Department, with ability to effectively respond to inquiries and apply appropriate procedures accordingly.
  • Working knowledge of standard accounting practices and procedures, with ability to count money, balance accounts, prepare detailed financial statements and maintain complete and accurate financial records.
  • Working knowledge of standard office procedures and computer software used by the Department with the ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations. 
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare documents/forms and written reports as required.

 

 

 

 

 

Physical Requirements

 

Incumbent performs majority of duties in a cash cage/vault, involving sitting for long periods, sitting/walking at will, working in a confined area, carrying objects, reaching, close/far vision, hearing sounds/communication, speaking clearly, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.  Incumbent maintains frequent contact with the public and may be exposed to irate/hostile individuals.  Incumbent occasionally works extended hours as needed.
