Incumbent serves as Leisure Services Supervisor for St. Joseph County Parks Department, responsible for planning and providing quality leisure programs, events, and recreational activities.
Responsibilities
Develops, coordinates, plans, and works leisure services programs, special events, and recreational activities including canoeing, kayaking, disc golf, fishing, hayrides, archery, orienteering, geocaching, and special events.
Actively oversees disc golf operations on a daily basis by collecting fees and operating the pro shop
Supervises part-time and seasonal staff, including interviewing job candidates, making hiring decisions, orienting new subordinates, planning, delegating, scheduling work assignments, establishing specific work goals, evaluating performance results, keeping supervisor and assigned staff informed of organizational developments, and maintaining discipline and recommending corrective action. Assists with supervising part-time and seasonal staff after hours and on weekends.
Kiosk development, display, and brochure creation for use throughout the parks
Works in a team environment and independently to plan, conduct, and evaluate public programs
Prepares written evaluations of Leisure Services programs and activities, including budgeting and tracking materials, personnel and attendance records, maintaining required paperwork and monetary deposits, assessing programs, and preparing written reports.
Operates utility vehicle, 15-passenger van with trailer, snowmobile, tractor, and various equipment and tools in the performance of duties.

Qualifications
Strong leadership, organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to speak publicly, delegate tasks, and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-moving environment.
Proven experience (1-3 years) working with the public, organizing and running programs. Knowledge of outdoor program design, scheduling, and inventory of equipment.
Must have adequate transportation to commute to work and between parks.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, work under time pressure, on several tasks at the same time, and work rapidly for long periods at times in extreme weather conditions.
Must be able to regularly work a flexible schedule, including extensive evenings and weekends.
Education/Experience
Baccalaureate Degree in Parks and Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Management, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Education, Elementary Education, or related field. Equivalent job experience will also be considered.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Experience working with differing age groups preferred
Thorough knowledge of accepted practices and principles relating to Leisure Services and outdoor education and recreation, with ability to plan, promote, and implement programs to meet the recreational and educational needs of various members and groups in the community.
Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to lift objects of 50lbs or more
Must be able to hike distances of a mile on trails of mixed terrain
Requires close and distant vision, color and depth perception, hearing, manual dexterity, and the ability to communicate effectively
Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
